Hopefully onwards and upwards, towards a greener life with a smaller carbon footprint than ever before. And with this in mind, here are our top tips on how to keep your eco resolutions in 2022. Because we’re assuming (rightly, we hope!) that if you’re reading this, then you care a lot about our planet too- and no doubt that’s been reflected in your goals and ambitions for 2022. Hoorah!

Making your resolutions

New year eco resolutions can be made at any time, so if you’re a little behind don’t worry. They can be edited, updated, altered or even scrapped altogether as the year goes on. The important thing about eco resolutions is that you’ve set your intentions, and whether or not you achieve the specific goals you set out to achieve, the steps you took in your attempts are what counts. Which leads us nicely on to our first tip:

Be realistic. You can change the world by yourself, in one year alone. You can, however, takes lots of small steps to make changes and to encourage others around you to make changes too. So when you make your resolutions, be realistic about what you can achieve. Don’t put yourself under unnecessary pressure.

Being accountable

Holding yourself accountable is an important part of the process when it comes to making and achieving your eco resolutions this year. What’s the point in challenging yourself to make specific changes you aren’t going to check in with yourself regularly to ensure progress is being made?

Keep a journal documenting your eco resolutions. This can be such a great way to stay on track and to see how you’re progressing as the year goes on. Plus, writing down your eco resolutions can often lead to lots more ideas, and will help you to reflect on what’s working and what isn’t.

Getting support

As with most things in life, having company is the best way to make a task more fun- and the same goes for your eco resolutions too. Being part of a group of like-minded individuals with the same goals can help to motivate and inspire- and create a sense of community too.

Get friends and family on board. The more, the merrier as they say! Hold each other accountable, give support and lend a helping hand throughout the year. Together, we can do amazing things!

Being flexible

As you make your eco resolutions at the start of 2022, you have literally no way of knowing how your journey is about to unfold. If living through a global pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that life can be predictable! So learning how to be flexible is definitely an essential skill to have.

Know that it’s ok to make changes to your eco resolutions. You start the year with one specific goal in mind, but it might soon become apparent that those goalposts need to move a little. That’s ok! Go with the flow, keep your overall intentions on track and those small steps will sort themselves out.

Share your success

We don’t always like to blow our own trumpets, but why not?! If you’ve achieved your eco resolutions and you’re proud of yourself then let people know! Your story could inspire others to take action too.

Don’t be afraid to use your knowledge to educate others. This is actually such a great way to stay on track yourself too. Keep a record of your achievements, the changes you’ve made and the difference your actions will continue to make. Seeing what you’ve achieved will help you stay on track and keep your determination to smash those eco resolutions year after year!
