How to live organically on a budget

“Your life does not get better by chance. It gets better by CHANGE.”

And when you think about it, it makes perfect sense. What do you most want to change about your life? Personally speaking, I want to be happy and healthy, and I know that one of the best ways to achieve this is by living a clean and healthy lifestyle. For me, that means organic.

Over recent years, more people have become aware of the numerous benefits to living an organic life, but there are still those who believe that they just cannot afford to. Nonsense. If you want something, you can have it- without breaking the bank. And if you want to live organically on a budget, we can show you how.

Say no to chemicals.

You don’t need them in your food, or your cosmetics. You don’t need them in your life. The world around you does not need them either, and in many ways the future of our children depends on us and the lifestyle choices we make today. So the first thing you need to do is to eliminate the chemicals in your home, and free yourself up to an organic lifestyle. That costs nothing.

Buy produce direct from farms

Miss out the local grocery shop (sorry!) and go straight to the farmer’s market, where produce is likely to be a lot cheaper. Yes, its a little more effort but nothing worth doing is going to be easy.

Buy supermarket own brand organic produce

There are some big label organic products out there, but most large supermarkets are now cottoning on to the fact that their customers want to eat cleaner these days. Own brand organic produce is significantly cheaper in most cases, so it makes sense to choose those products where you can.

Grow your own veg

Gardening is a wonderful way to cleanse the soul, and there can be fewer things that bring satisfaction than pulling up your own carrots ahead of dinner time! Get the kids involved too and if you can, set aside a small space dedicated just to growing fruit and veg to eat. The best thing about growing your own is the fact that you know exactly where you food has come from, and that there have been no chemicals involved in the process at all.

Make your own cleaning products

Its not so easy to ditch the chemicals when you know that they do a good job around the house, but there are plenty of natural materials that work just as well too. The following products are excellent to use:

  • Vinegar. Nature’s secret weapon, with so many different uses! Mix one part water to one part vinegar and pop into a spray bottle to clean around the kitchen. This solution is great for mopping floors too. Mix one part vinegar with four parts water to clean glass and windows.
  • Lemon. Mix one part lemon juice with two parts bicarbonate of soda to make a natural bleach. Great for cleaning bathrooms.
  • Baking powder. Mix to a paste with water and use it to clean your oven. Mix with salt, lemon wedges and borax to make a scouring powder.

Living organically does not need to break the bank, and it would be interesting to see how much money you can save by following just some of these tips. Do let us know how you get on!
