Is your skin in need of a little TLC right now? You're not alone! Summer can bring with it a host of potential skin problems, such as acne, dry rashes, prickly heat... and this is why your skin care regime needs to be adapted regularly. This week we're looking at how you can adapt your skin care regime for summer - with a few DIY recipes you can use at home. Enjoy!
Add an SPF to your regime every day
Experts agree that sunscreen should be part of our daily routine from April onwards, and this is one tip we really cannot stress enough. Even if it's overcast, you still need to protect your skin so please don't forget! Go for a moisturiser that has SPF built in an use it every day.
Exfoliate every day
Thanks to added humidity during summer, plus sunscreen and sweat, exfoliation is an absolute must during summer! You need to be slough away the layer of dead cells and allow your skin to breathe, so this is another skin care step you really can't afford to skip. We love DIY body scrubs and this one is really easy to make:
Coffee and coconut scrub
- One quarter of a cup of sea salt
- One quarter of a cup of ground coffee
- Two tablespoons of melted coconut oil
- 1 small cucumber
- One third of a cup of distilled water
- One teaspoon of aloe vera
- One teaspoon of witch hazel
extract the essence. Pour into a spray bottle along with the water, aloe and with hazel and voila! You can pop some pieces of diced cucumber into the bottle too if you want to. Use the mist whenever you need to cool down a little.
Drink lots of water
Whatever you put into your body is reflected in your skin, so if you want to be hydrated and healthy then make sure you're drinking a lot of water this summer. In fact, this should be a staple of your skincare routine all year long - but especially in the summer, when it's a lot easier to become dehydrated.
Add cooling foods to your diet
The body heats up during summer! And to combat this, not only do we need to make sure we drink plenty of water, but we need to add a few cooling foods to our diet too. Foods such as those high in vitamin C, coconut water, vegetables and lemons are great for the body during the summer as they have fantastic anti-inflammatory properties so get them on the shopping order this week.
Moisturise well!
So, so important all year round but especially in summer! If you've got a pot of organic coconut oil, you've got all you need this season. Coconut oil will provide a light sun protection layer for your skin, it will protect your hair against the elements and it will also soothe and calm your skin after a day in the sun. An absolute must.
Don't forget the lip balm!
Lock in the moisture with a good lip balm made from coconut oil or shea butter. Or, make your own! We love this simple recipe:
Sweet orange lip balm
- One teaspoon of raw shea butter
- half a teaspoon of organic, unrefined virgin coconut oil
- One quarter of a teaspoon of sweet almond oil
- Six drops of sweet orange essential oil
