Product Development Manager

Job Description: Product Development Manager

Hours: Full Time

Permanent/Fixed Term: Permanent

Location: Broadway, flexible working

Key Objectives

Reporting into and working with Founder on the innovation and development of products that meet brand strategy and are launched within marketing timeframes, specifically the natural, ethical, vegan, cruelty free beauty industry.

Overall responsibility for all organisational aspects of Product Development.

Key Tasks

Product Development – manage the end-to-end product development process, from concept to final sign off. Ensure all technical requirements are applied during the NPD process (including packaging, labelling, artwork approvals) all within the laid down timeframe, to the required quality level whilst meeting internal financial KPI’s for the project. Ensure correct documented processes and procedures are followed for all elements of the project in the areas of:

  • Critical path management: for each project, to create and maintain a critical path to ensure the project is delivered on time and report on any deviations, which could impact on the delivery of the final project.
  • Profitability: work with the Commercial Accountant to ensure profitability of all ranges through negotiation both with suppliers and a thorough approach to cost management
  • Formulation: brief manufacturers with product specifications, negotiating pricing and ordering samples. Propose and develop new formulations through innovation. Create formula breakdowns and ingredient lists for new products
  • Sampling: ensure all pre-production and production samples are organised and signed off internally and externally. Manage any development trials.
  • Design Management: Brief designer on packaging design and copy, approve proofs and ensure the contents, product imagery, barcodes, product codes and batch codes are all correct. Manage the artwork to print process with designer and printers
  • Specifications: generate full and accurate product specifications for use by suppliers and internally. Manage product SKU code and barcode creation in accordance to company protocol.
  • Bills of Materials (BOM): ensure any BOM information is relayed to Operations for input into ERP system
  • Regulatory & Compliance: Ensure all technical aspects of a project are completed – safety assessments, product testing, regulatory compliance and claims – with 3rd parties. Provide regulatory guidance regarding new and reformulated products and product labelling. Review product Test Reports, e.g., stability, challenge test reports, SDS, safety assessments etc. Create and update PIFs and the preparation of product specifications and quality contracts with manufacturing suppliers for quality assurance. Manage notifications of products in relevant territory and manage documentary export requirements SCNP, CPNP, EURP.
  • Accreditations: manage certification renewals to Vegan Society, Cruelty Free, RSPO – update records as required
  • Quality: ensure products are delivered in-line with company, customer and industry standards in terms of quality, regulatory compliance and ethical trading standards. Investigate and report on non-conformance. Provide technical data and documentation to customers and internal teams. Review production paperwork to release production batches for delivery.
  • Supply Resources: manage 3rd party providers – manufacturing, raw materials and packaging and to work closely with colleagues across the whole business on the identification and qualification of new supply resources – to ensure supplier base remains sustainable with the growth the strategic needs of company
  • Continuous Improvement: to work closely with colleagues across the whole business on the development and implementation of continuous improvement initiatives to support customer service and enhance innovation, quality and reliability as well as cost and lead-time reduction


  • Educated to Degree Level
  • Previous product development experience, ideally in natural health & beauty FMCG, preferred
  • Previous project management experience, particularly CTP and cost management
  • Previous experience of development of products and/or packaging with a UK manufacturing supply base
  • Mathematically astute with good standard of English language
  • Fully conversant with Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel & PowerPoint
  • Previous experience of product code, product specification and BOM creation
  • Knowledge of cosmetics technical compliance and current cosmetics regulations
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of global standards related to the beauty industry (i.e., ISO 22716:2007, REACH, GMP etc)
  • Interest in ethical and sustainability issues – We are a B Corp!
