Earth Hour is almost upon us once more, and here at Little Soap HQ, this is an event we take pretty seriously. It’s an event we should all take seriously. Will YOU be powering down for 60 minutes, to make a difference for our planet?
What is Earth Hour?
Earth Hour is a global movement, brought to us all by the World Wildlife Fund back in 2007. On the 31st March of that year, 2.2 million individuals and businesses in Sydney sent the world a message. They were fed up with inaction, they wanted to make a difference in the fight against climate change. They simply switched off their lights for one hour. And that one hour led to a powerful global campaign.
Today, Earth Hour allows the world to unite in one single act of respect, love and dedication to our planet. And now it’s more than just switching off your lights for an hour (although that small act alone can be enough). It’s about rebuilding connections and being part of a huge environmental movement. It’s 190 countries across the globe, joining forces to show their support for climate and nature.
What difference can one hour make?
By powering down, turning off our lights and closing our screens, we can all make a difference. But it’s not just about turning off the lights and reducing energy usage. Those humble beginnings have led to initiatives that are:
Tackling deforestation: WWF Uganda launched the first ever Earth Hour Forest in East Africa in 2013. The goal? To restore 2,700 hectares of degraded land.
Revolutionising how we use technology: Shanghai set up ‘solar trees’ following their Earth Hour campaign, allowing the public to charge their phones with renewable green energy.
Literally out of this world: Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti took a ‘Climate Change’ sign with her to the International Space Station in 2015!
And there are so many more ways that Earth Hour is making a difference. But if all you’re able to do is switch off your lights, please know that is AMAZING. That is going to have a HUGE difference, not just in how much energy is saved, but in the impact you can have on your community too.
